Home printers love to "shrink to fit." That's fine for a document, but it ruins a pattern, template, or poster that has to come out at an exact real-world size. This guide shows how to print at exactly 100% (Actual Size) and — the part most guides skip — how to prove the scale is right before you cut, trace, or tape.
It applies to anything you print to size: posters, sewing patterns, stained-glass cartoons, scroll-saw and woodworking templates, wall stencils.
Why your print comes out the wrong size
By default most print dialogs scale the page so the artwork fits the printable area. Two things go wrong:
- "Fit to Page" / "Shrink oversized pages" rescales your artwork by a few percent, so a 12 in template prints at 11.6 in — enough to throw off a joint or a seam.
- A paper-size mismatch (the PDF is Letter, the printer is set to A4, or vice versa) triggers auto-scaling even when you didn't ask for it.
The fix is always the same: turn scaling off (100% / Actual Size), match the paper size, then measure to confirm.
Set Actual Size in the common print dialogs
Adobe Acrobat / Reader — the most reliable choice for tiled PDFs. In the print dialog, under Page Sizing & Handling, choose Actual size (not "Fit" or "Shrink oversized pages"). Confirm the paper size matches the document.
Chrome / Edge (print a PDF from the browser) — open More settings and set Scale to 100 (a custom value, not "Fit to printable area"). Also set Paper size to match the file.
macOS Preview — in the print dialog set Scale to 100%, and make sure Paper Size matches the document. Avoid "Scale to Fit".
Windows Photos / default PDF viewer — these often lack a true 100% option and quietly scale. Print tiled PDFs from Acrobat Reader or Chrome instead.
Rule of thumb: if the dialog only offers "Fit", it is not safe for exact-size printing. Use a viewer that lets you type 100%.
Prove it: measure the calibration square
Turning scaling off should be enough — but printers and drivers don't always obey. The only way to be certain is to measure. GrafixManager prints a calibration square of a known size on page one for exactly this reason.
- Print page 1 only first.
- Measure the calibration square with a ruler along both sides.
- If it matches the stated size, your printer is at a true 100% — print the rest.
- If it's off, your dialog is still scaling: re-check the scale (100%) and the paper-size match, then reprint page 1 and measure again.
Measuring one page before committing a 20-page pattern saves paper, ink, and a ruined blank.
Assemble without losing the accuracy
- Same paper, every page. Switching paper size mid-job re-scales later pages.
- Trim on the marks and keep the overlap. The overlap strip is there so edges line up; the alignment marks tell you where.
- Work row by row. Align, tape, move on — small errors don't accumulate.
Quick troubleshooting
- Everything prints slightly small → "Fit to Page" is still on, or the paper size doesn't match the file. Set 100% and match the paper.
- The calibration square is right but pieces don't meet → check that you're trimming to the marks and keeping the overlap, not cutting it away.
- No 100% option in your viewer → print from Acrobat Reader or Chrome.
- Image looks soft at size → that's resolution, not scale. Use a larger source or reduce the finished size; a PDF or vector source stays crisp at any size.
Set the exact size, print at 100%, measure the square. Do those three and the assembled result is the real-world size you asked for — every time.
